Mikhail Yaganov explains the driving stick for reindeer teams

“This is the driving stick (nulgyr) for the reindeer team. It’s used to steer the animals. When riding, you hold it like this and gently tap the reindeer. Here’s the handle – you hold it in your hand – and at the other end is a pointed tip. You can also use it to push off the ground when going uphill or to brake the sled when going downhill. These sticks are usually made from strong birch or cedar wood because they need to be both light and flexible.”
