"In the past, I had my own dog sled team with five sled dogs. The musher has to know them all well. Nowadays, only a few still have that expertise. In the 1980s, dog sled transport almost disappeared here in Kamchatka. But at the beginning of the 1990s, people started to revive the tradition. Currently, there are six dog sled teams in Kovran. They are mainly used for everyday tasks, such as hauling firewood from the nearby birch forests. Some of these teams also take part in the annual Beringia dog sled race, which runs through half of Kamchatka."
