Dances

"In Kamchatka, the old dances have not been forgotten. You can still see their movements today, with the upper body bent slightly toward the ground. The dancers close their eyes and move their shoulders in rhythm with the drumbeat. We believe today that it is a Koryak dance, but perhaps the Itelmens once danced in a similar way. No one can truly show how the Itelmens danced in the past. The revived festival Alkhalalalai is based on observations of customs and celebrations recorded by Krasheninnikov. His descriptions inspired the staging of the dances performed at the festival today – dances that imitate animals and birds. Dance can be seen as the language of the soul. In it, a person’s character is reflected. If you don’t know someone, watch how they dance. Dance also creates a connection to others. Back then, a great celebration was held once a year. All the surrounding family groups would gather for it – and they would talk with each other. Today, we still hold the Alkhalalalai festival once a year. And what a variety of guests come! Dance plays the central role. It brings vitality, joy, new encounters, and plenty of laughter."
